Golden Age is beyond honored to serve as one of the hosts for this year’s Cantillon Zwanze Day on Saturday, April 25.  Cantillon, a renowned Lambic brewery located in the heart of Brussels since its founding in 1900, is the greatest mixed-culture fermentation brewery in the world.  Its current owner and brewer, Jean Van Roy, has been an ardent steward of the Lambic tradition of his family, steadfastly preserving the traditional methods and recipes for these truly special beers since he took the brewery over in 2011.  He has been an ambassador for traditional Lambic around the world.  And the beers that Cantillon makes are highly sought for their balance, consistency, and adherence to incredibly high standards.

Zwanze Day is a world-wide celebration of Cantillon that is celebrated once every 2 years with the release of a special “Zwanze” beer that Cantillon creates specifically for the event.  The word “Zwanze” comes from the Brussels dialect, and loosely means an ironic or surreal sense of humor.  And, in that vein, the Zwanze days beers are unique and one-time brews created with an eye towards experimentation and collaboration.

This year, Zwanze Day will, for the first time ever, mark the release of two beers, both made in collaboration with England’s Sullivan Vermouth.  The two Zwanze beers are named “Artémis La Blanche” and “Artémis La Rouge.”  The beers have been four years in the making, and were made specifically to explore the idea of Lambic as the base of a vermouth.  Per Jean, “Artémis La Blanche is a blend of an elixir made from gentian, coriander, rhubarb root, juniper, sage, angelica, wormwood, and many other herbs blended with Lambic. Artémis La Rouge is a blend of an elixir made from verbena, marjoram, rose, apple, curry plant, wormwood, and many other herbs, blended with Kriek.”  Both beers have an alcohol content of 7% abv.

The name Artémis was chosen for this beer because of its connection with absinthe, or Artemisia, a plant that is an essential ingredient in the herbal, plant and root infusions used to make vermouth.  Artémis is the goddess of hunting and nature in Greek mythology.

Cantillon hand-selected the locations that will serve these beers, and, as is traditional, we will all serve them together over a toast with Jean (who will be celebrating in Brussels) at 3 p.m. EST (9 p.m. in Brussels).

Here are the details regarding the Golden Age Zwanze Day:

Golden Age will remain open to the public, and will open at 11:30 a.m. on April 25th.  When we open, in addition to our normal Golden Age offerings, we will tap four Cantillon beers for sale to the public in 8 ounce pours:  Classic Geuze, Cuvée Saint-Gilloise, Saint Lamvinus, and Vigneronne.  These beers will be available for anyone to purchase, without tickets or reservations, and will remain on tap for as long as supplies last.  The Golden Age kitchen will have a limited menu of Belgian and Belgian-inspired fare throughout the entirety of the day.

Due to high demand, and the need for certainty for some of our non-local friends who plan on travelling for the event, we are going to pre-sell tickets for the Zwanze Day beers, which we will begin serving only in advance of the 3 p.m. toast.  These beers will be served in 5 ounce pours, and the tickets will provide one pour of each of the two beers.  Following Jean’s advice, we will first serve the Artémis La Rouge, which we will pre-pour and provide to ticket holders around beginning at 2:50 p.m., so that every ticket holder will have a beer in hand for the 3 p.m. toast.  The Cantillon beers will be pouring at a separate bar (located outdoors, if weather is permitting) which we will close at 2:40 p.m. to begin preparing for the toast, and then reopen immediately following the toast.  Ticket holders can then exchange their ticket for their second beer, the Artémis La Blanche, and then any remaining Cantillon will be available for purchase thereafter.
